13 Secuelas, 1 Reboot, 2 Remakes , 1 Spin Off y algunos títulos originales componen lo más importante del Summer 2013. Poco menos de 40 películas son las que se van a estrenar masivamente entre el primer fin de semana de Mayo y Labor Day.
Esta temporada es por lejos más convocante del año, generando históricamente un 40% de la recaudación anual. Este año quizás sea el Summer más sobrepoblado por franquicias y superproducciones que hayamos visto en mucho tiempo, por lo cual es lógico pensar que va a haber mucho estudio perdiendo plata.

Un Buen Dia para Matar una Franquicia
Los que me conocen saben que amo Die Hard. Es mi serie preferida. John McClane es mi personaje favorito.
Die Hard cambió el concepto del cine de acción, allá por el año 1988. No por sus escenas vistosas, o por el solo hecho de contener la acción en un lugar cerrado (el edificio Nakatomi) sinó porque era una película con un guión inteligente, con personajes desarrollados, con villanos que no eran simples matones o estúpidos excéntricos (a la Bond). Había un tiempo para desarrollo aun para los pequeños roles, como el de Ellis, el trepador y cocainómano compañero de Holly Gennero; Al, el policía que ayuda a nuestro héroe, o Dick, el desagradable periodista. Ni hablar de nuestro protagonista, alguien verdaderamente de carne y hueso, que además sangraba y sufría con cada golpe, no era solo un vengador invencible o un policía perfecto.
Y todos esos detalles, hacían coalición de manera perfecta y hacían que todo y cada escena tuviera sentido.
Eso hizo que a partir de ese momento, todos los ejecutivos de Hollywood quisieran tener su Die Hard. Es conocido el cuento del speech del ejecutivo vendiendo su proyecto como “es como Die Hard, pero en un tren, o en un bus, o en un barco, etc, etc.”
Es entendible que con el paso de las secuelas, tanto se exprima, que poco o nada queda. Die Hard 2 fue un intento de copia carbón y funcionó hasta ahí. Die Hard With a Vengeance le dió frescura torciendo un poco las reglas sin llegar a romperlas, incorporando un sidekick (además uno de lujo como Samuel L. Jackson) a la ecuación. Live Free Or Die Hard, se expandió en locaciones, cuidó bastante su vocabulario, pero la esencia estaba intacta. John McClane seguía siendo el tipo que estaba en el lugar erróneo en el momento erróneo, y que aun sin perder su buen humor, estaba dispuesto a ir hasta el final con tal de atrapar al villano de turno.
El humor. Elemento fundamental en cada una de las cuatro películas anteriores. No en vano en la página oficial de Facebook, los fans de la película eligieron (después de semanas de votación) una escena de la primer película donde McClane, dentro de un tubo de ventilación irónicamente imita a su esposa diciéndole lo bomba que lo iban a pasar en la costa…
Como decía un viejo tema de los ABC, “that was then, but this is now…” (eso era antes, pero ahora es así)
Vi las señales de humo allá por 2010 cuando me enteré que el elegido para escribir el guión era un tal Skip Woods, más conocido por ser el único que había logrado dormirnos a todos con una película de los X-Men (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Luego las señales de humo se transformaron en colchones prendidos fuego volando por las ventanas de un edificio en llama cuando confirmaron a John Moore en la dirección. Moore, responsable de las intrascendentes Behind The Enemy Lines y Max Payne.
Holy Jesus.
La cosa solo empeoró cuando finalmente se revelo que McClane volaría a Rusia. WFT!? Rusia? Por qué? Cuál va a ser la excusa? El cast se iba confirmando y no había ningún nombre, con lo cual íbamos a tener la versión Die Hard con Villano Generico, cosa que logramos superar con el tiempo post Timothy Olyphnat, solo porque su papel era hacer de un super geek, y su cara de «blandito» coincidía con lo requerido.
Pero aun cuando todo decía que esto no era una buena idea, no dejaba de ser una Die Hard. Bruce Willis, John McClane = suficiente.
Sumado a que en estas últimas semanas, vimos cómo la gente de Fox comenzó a moverse. Decidieron hacer la película con una calificación R (donde tendríamos un vocabulario más adulto como en las primeras tres películas) ; volvieron a llamar a Mary Elizabeth Winstead para que hicera al menos un cameo para interpretar a Lucy; hicieron una fiesta 25º aniversario armando un mural perpetuo de cientos de metros en un lote de los estudios de Fox (algo totalmente inédito); gran avant premiere en Londres a todo trapo; movieron unos hilos para que justo esta semana condecoraran a Bruce Willis en Francia…. y hasta consiguieron tapa en la GQ de USA.
“Deben estar orgullosos!” pensé. “No puede fallar!”
Pero, aun así, todavía estaba ese poster. Nada más ni nada menos que el poster oficial. Bruce Willis y atrás, solo un poquito más chico en perspectiva, Jay Courtney. Quién? Un N/N. No importa.
Sensaciones encontradas ante el pre estreno. Pero ahí estábamos! Y arrancó.
Después de 5 primeros minutos extraños para una película de la franquicia, donde se suceden unos new flash de la CNN, mas rusos hablando en ruso, tratando de contar el setup de la historia, nos encontramos con Jake, el hijo de John, quien está a punto de ser encarcelado. Si, primero aparece este muchacho.
De la trama no pienso contar mucho, salvo que John viaja de New York a Rusia para ponerse en contacto nuevamente con su hijo y pronto se verá envuelto en problemas.
Pero el problema lo tendremos nosotros, los fans de la saga. El problema principal es que esta no es una película de John McClane, sino una película de Jack McClane. O en el mejor de los casos, compartida.
El problema es que no cuenta con ninguna de las virtudes de la saga, nada de todo lo que describí en el principio de la nota. Y cuando se acuerdan de condimentarla con virtudes, lo hacen en cuenta gotas, dejándonos una película de acción común y silvestre, que si no fuera de la saga de Die Hard, podría decirse que no está mal del todo, que cuenta con muy buenas escenas de acción (aunque inverosímiles), un guion básico, un villano básico, y una relación padre-hijo en medio de los tiros que hasta resultaría interesante.
Pero hay un problema mayor, y es el destrato que somete el guionista al personaje de McClane, lo que a mi entender califica como una falta de respeto a sus fans. Durante más de media película, vemos a McClane ser verdugueado por su hijo como si fuera un inútil, y relegado de la acción.
Puedo entender que a el director no le sobren ideas, que hayan querido hacer algo diferente (incluso llevando a que McClane no esté tan irónico como 25 años atrás), y que el guionista no tenga capacidad para escribir otra línea simpática para nuestro héroe que no sea “estoy de vacaciones”, que a la cuarta vez duele al oírla.
Lo que no se puede tolerar, es que John McClane relegue su protagonismo en su propia franquicia. Esto lo pensaba mientras veía la película, y el último fotograma me dio la razón.
Bruce Willis le dijo a The Sun allá por Octubre de 2010 que pensaba hacer dos Die Hard mas, y terminar ahí, para luego entregarle la posta a otro. Esa última parte es la que no tuvimos en consideración en su momento. Si quería entregar la posta, lo hubiera hecho directamente en esta, aunque eso no sería un final digno para su jugosa historia.
Mi calificación final: si esta fuera una película de acción más, le daría un 7.5 o un 8 en un buen día. Como película de la saga de Die Hard, tercera franquicia más importante de Fox solo detrás de Star Wars y las cinco X-Men, lo pongo un 4 o un 5 siendo bondadoso.
Cerremos en 5, por todo lo que nos has dado.
